We spent 4 hours exploring this incredible place, and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. There were still areas of the park that were next to impossible to get to no matter how hard we tried. The main entrance, filled with shops, restaurants, makeshift police and fire stations, ticket booths and even a public hall was showing clear signs that the plant life wanted back what was once theirs.
The bumper cars, screw coaster, merry-go-round and even Japan’s largest wooden roller coaster were still intact and almost tempting to climb aboard. Upon entering the arcade it was clear that people had had their way with this deserted place, and managed to scrounge for everything they could leaving nothing of value behind. What was once a paradise for some, now lies in ruins, and is slowly being destroyed by the elements. Who knows how long it will be around before someone or something reclaims it.

I work at Stockyard Photos in Houston. I enjoyed your photo gallery of the Nara Dreamland. Being a native Houstonian, I remember our own themepark, Astroworld, fondly. Sadly, it was demolished several years ago. I think human creations that have been abandoned and left to nature are very interesting, Battleship Island, Sports World Izu, etc.
Thank you for being on the front line!
Thanks for sharing the photos. I never knew that such a place existed, too bad it didn’t survive.

Awesome work!
Hi!
I wonder if you can help me.
I produce a magazine for the European Coaster Club, and I’d really be interested in printing some of your Nara Dreamland pictures.
I sincerely hope this is possible.
We actually visited the park in 2005, and had a great time. Aska was one of the finest rides in Japan.
There are pictures of the trip here.

Many thanks.

[...] Kyle Merriman recently visited Nara Dreamland, the abandoned Disneyland knockoff theme park in Nara, Japan that was built in 1961 and closed in 2006. He found it to be fairly intact, except for the fact that there are no people there and the weeds have grown everywhere. See the state of the park in a gallery of 56 photographs. Link [...]
Your photography is beautiful. Great work!
[...] “奈良梦境”是在奈良,一个日本遗弃的游乐园。乐园在1961年建成,但是2006年被关闭了,原因不明。不过这一切自然保存的还这么完好,日本空气环境应该算是很不错的。这个地方有点凄凉,如果到晚上有点鬼城的感觉,不过白天有种去拍照的冲动,另一种风景。一共有52张,挑选了几张放出来,可以去这里看全部 [...]
I visited Dreamland in 1969 when I was 9 years old, and have excited memories of the kindness of the Japanese people towards us as foreign children. Having never been somewhere similar in Australia, it was a real novelty. However even aged 9 I could tell it was a bit of a “cheap copy”!

Awesome photography. Seems like a pretty eerie place, but one I wouldn’t mind walking around and finding more about. Glad I’m not the only one interested by the stories old, run-down places like this have to offer.
Keep up the good work!

WOW!
i have been obsessed with abandoned places for as long as i can remember. The contrast of the bright colours with nature’s way of taking over is amazing! I would love to explore a place like this some day. Great photos
